Water Conservation

Water is a precious resource, and when we waste water we impact our environment and our neighbors, not to mention our pocketbook.  The average annual monthly usage per connection in Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 96 (WCID 96) is 14,229 gallons.  There are 2,015 residential connections in the WCID 96.  Imagine, if we could just reduce the average monthly usage of each residential connection by 500 gallons, we would conserve 12,090,000 gallons of water a year!  That’s enough water to fill over 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools.  Here are just a few water conservation tips, which, if followed will reduce your water bill and help us save water:

  • Don’t leave the water running – Turn off the water while washing dishes, brushing your teeth, or doing other chores.
  • Check all faucets and pipes for leaks and perform the necessary repairs.
  • Install faucets with aerators and install low-flow showerheads.
  • Install Energy Star-certified appliances such as high-efficiency dishwashers and washing machines.
  • Check your toilet and make sure it doesn’t “run” or leak.
  • Landscape your property with drought tolerant plants or native species.
  • Water your lawn less often, but for longer periods of time.
  • Sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of hosing down the pavement.
  • Check for and repair any broken sprinkler heads and irrigation lines. Position sprinkler heads so that they water the lawn and not the pavement.
